2019 Firestone Vineyard Riesling, Santa Barbara
95% Riesling, 5% Gewürztraminer
2020 was a notably drier than usual year for Santa Barbara County. Bud break began in March with mild temperatures that carried through spring and summer, with the exception of short heat spikes occurring in late June, August and mid September. With the return of mild weather, we were able to pick each block at the optimal time. Harvest began September 3 and finished November 3.
The Santa Ynez Valley is a small eastern sub-appellation of Santa Barbara County. One of the first varietals we planted was our estate Riesling, grown outside of the little town of Los Olivos, in chalky, gravelly soil that provides the ideal drainage for the vines.
