2019 Three Rivers Petit Verdot Heart of the Hill Vineyard, Red Mountain
Available Starting May 10
Petit Verdot is known primarily as a blending grape for the Bordeaux varieties. It adds color, fruit and weight to the palate. But when bottled on its own, Petit Verdot has a depth and juiciness that is pretty amazing. Our 2019 Red Mountain Petit Verdot from Heart of the Hill Vineyard is impenetrably dark with powerful salal berry and blackberry compote aromatics and flavors with hints of violet. It is thick and commanding with intense dark fruit, earthy umami and sorghum tones with lush tannins that lead to an opulent finish.

We had a snowy start to the 2019 growing season and a wet spring without much frost pressure. The weather improved in June and continued with a nice, warm summer. We harvested the petit verdot on September 25. Higher acidities and lower alcohols are to be expected with our wines for this vintage that are showing tremendous age-ability which is something harder to achieve in a hotter vintage.
Red Mountain is the smallest appellation in Washington State and one of the warmest with broad, southwest facing slopes. Lacking in rainfall and soil nutrients, you would assume this was an inhospitable place to grow anything. But sure enough, grapes love this place and so do we. Situated in the very middle of the AVA, Heart of the Hill Vineyard has quickly developed a reputation as a power player on Red Mountain. The fruit from Heart of the Hill produces deep, brooding and assertive wines. The Petit Verdot planted here in 2006 by the Williams family has shown that it’s got star quality.
