Our 2019 Sebastiani Gravel Bed Red Blend bottling features a blend Cabernet Sauvignon from Cherryblock vineyard and carefully selected Sonoma County Merlot and Barbera vineyards. This wine displays hints of blackberry and dark cherry fruit flavors interlaced with graphite and bergamot tea dance on the palate. Flavors of cedar and espresso complement the soft tannins and lengthy dried herb finish.

Our 2019 Gravel Bed Red is a harmonious expression of gravely vineyard sites from a moderately warm vintage. Its deep ruby red color leads into forward aromas of baked plum, earth, cassis and incense. Rich flavors of date, fig and sandalwood lead to a milk chocolate finish over fine tannins.

Winemaker Notes

Gravelly soils are responsible for some of the world’s greatest wines. With their superior draining properties and lack of nutrients, they encourage better balanced vines, less sprawl, smaller berries and more intense wines. Gravel Bed Red, as the name suggests, is a proprietary blend showcasing some of the best gravelly sites in Sonoma County. Our 2019 bottling features a blend Cabernet Sauvignon from Cherryblock vineyard and carefully selected Sonoma County Merlot and Barbera vineyards.

Production Notes

We cold soaked many of the lots to increase color and flavor extraction. All of the grapes were fermented warm and only a small portion of press wine was included for aromatics and structure. After fermentation, all of the individual lots were racked off the lees and put into French oak barrels. After aging for 18 months, the wine was bottled in August 2021.

Vineyard Notes

The 2019 growing season started later than usual in many California wine regions. A wet spring followed by cool temperatures allowed the grapes to mature gradually. Cool temperatures continued throughout the growing season resulting in longer hang time and lower sugar yields. Vintners are praising the full flavors, fresh acidity and superb balance of the 2019 vintage.
