2019 Firestone Vineyard Malbec, Santa Ynez Valley
Upon the first swirl of the glass aromas of roasted spiced plum, musky freshly-ground white pepper and grilled venison intrigue the senses. The palate is deep and complex with layers of roasted red fruit, premium oak and espresso. This bold wine pairs beautifully with BBQ tri-tip, steak, bison burgers and big game as well as heavy tomato based sauces such as Bolognese.
2019 had a robust amount of rain during the winter, ending Santa Barbara County's drought. We had early bud break with a mild spring and summer. Our first pick was September 11th. There was a short heat spike in early September which lasted about one week, then we were back to consistent, mild weather again, allowing us to pick each block at the optimum time. The vineyard was completely picked by November 11th.

The grapes for this wine come from a vineyard on our estate in Santa Ynez Valley. Situated at a 1,000-foot elevation, this hillside vineyard is comprised of rocky, sandy, alluvial soil on the edge of a plateau, ideal soil for growing our Malbec because of its permeable qualities. During the growing season, the fog sits right on top of our vineyards, creating desirable, cool foggy morning weather, with diurnal temperature swings of 50 degrees.
