Deep garnet-purple colored, it starts out a little broody/tarry, giving way to a core of warm cassis, baked plums, and mulberries, plus hints of charcoal, charcuterie, and sautéed herbs. Our 2018 Peral Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon offers strong black currant and decadent dark chocolate aromas. The palate is big and viscous filled with flavors of black cherry, cassis and oak spice. This is a well-structured and full bodied wine that beautifully displays the quality of our Rutherford Estate terroir. While approachable now, this wine will improve with age and gain complexity over the next 10-15 years.

Ratings

Out of the darkness, smoky wood esters emerge first, then a scent of red currants, sweet and soft. Come back to the wine a day later, and the flavors have clarified around those currants, light and lithe. This is a gentle cabernet that may not appear to need aging, but it will reward those who allow it some time. - Wine & Spirits 92 points.

Winemaker Notes

The Foley Johnson 2018 Peral Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from our Peral Vineyard, a 10 acre parcel adjacent to our main Rutherford Estate. The name Peral pays homage to the sites history as a pear orchard. Today a single 100 year old pear tree remains in the vineyard. Its comprised of thicker and heavier adobe soils with small amounts of gravel which are perfect for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. The ideal growing conditions in the vineyard allow our Bordeaux varietals to reach full maturity on the vine without taking on the green, leafy taste of under-ripe fruit.

Production Notes

The wine went through 100% malolactic fermentation and was aged for 27 months in 70% new French oak before going into bottle on January 21, 2021.

Vineyard Notes

The 2018 growing season was one of the mildest and smoothest in recent memory. Mild spring weather led to good fruit set in most varietals and moderate weather throughout the year made for ideal growing conditions. There were no major heat spikes, which gave us longer hang-time and great ripening on the vine. While a fairly long harvest, the 2018 crop delivered fruit with complex flavors and was of excellent quality.
