Aromas of ripe plum, black cherry, clove, and cocoa dust. These enticing aromas complement the vivid raspberry, red currant, dried herb and tobacco flavors present on the palate.

Our 2018 Handmade Merlot offers sultry aromas of black cherry, tobacco and sweet oak. Though full bodied, the palate is smooth and well-structured, with notes of dark plum, black currant, cocoa and anise. Soft tannins and mouthwatering dark fruit flavors linger on the finish, leaving you wanting another sip.

Winemaker Notes

In the heart of the Foley Johnson Rutherford Estate, our Merlot is farmed in the famous “Rutherford Dust” that yields small, yet intense clusters from well-balanced vines. The ideal growing conditions in the vineyard allow our Bordeaux varietals to reach full maturity on the vine without taking on any green, leafy taste of under-ripe fruit.

100% Merlot from Rutherford, Napa Valley.

Production Notes

The 2018 growing season was one of the mildest and smoothest in recent memory. Mild spring weather led to good fruit set in most varietals and moderate weather throughout the year made for ideal growing conditions. There were no major heat spikes, which gave us longer hang-time and great ripening on the vine. While a fairly long harvest, the 2018 crop delivered fruit with complex flavors and was of excellent quality.

Vineyard Notes

The Foley Johnson Rutherford Estate Handmade Merlot is grown on loamy soils of gravel, clay and sand which help provide ample drainage and decrease the vigor of foliage growth. These ideal growing conditions allow our Bordeaux varietals to reach full maturity on the vine without taking on the green leafy taste of under-ripened fruit. After 26 months of aging in 50% new French and Hungarian oak, the wine was bottled on January 21, 2020.
