2017 Sebastiani Patrick's Vineyard Chardonnay, Carneros
Our 2017 Patrick’s Vineyard Chardonnay displays elegant aromas of toasted almonds, baked apples, vanilla and baking spices. These aromas continue onto the palate with additional notes of ripe apricot, pear and hazelnut. While this wine is fermented dry, there is a subtle and lingering sweetness from the new French Oak on the finish. Our richest and most unctuous style from this vineyard. - David Nakaji, Winemaker

16 months in 100% new French oak
Barrel fermented and aged sur lie in French oak (100% new).
After hand picking and whole-cluster pressing, the two different clonal lots were barrel fermented and aged sur lie in French oak (100% new). Aggressive stirring enhanced the aromatics, texture and flavors. We went through an initial barrel selection process to identify superior lots. We then did a second barrel selection to create the best possible final blend. The wine was barrel aged for 16 months prior to bottling.
Patrick’s Vineyard is named after owner Bill Foley’s son. It is an exposed, rolling site in lower Carneros, close to San Pablo Bay. The cool, foggy, windy climate and marine soils at Patrick’s are ideal for full-bodied, well-structured Chardonnay. The vineyard is planted to three excellent, low-production clones: #6, #17 (better known as the Robert Young Selection), and #95. The grapes are grown on a divided canopy to increase sun exposure resulting in more “yellow fruit” as opposed to green flavors. This is consistently Sebastiani’s best vineyard for Chardonnay. The 2017 growing season started off with record setting rainfalls, delaying bud break from years past. Spring and summer experienced a mixture of foggy, warm and windy conditions. The summer months were moderately warm allowing the grapes to mature at an ideal pace. Extreme heat spikes at the end of August to early September pushed harvest ahead of schedule. The fruit for this wine entered the winery on September 25, 2017.
