2017 Sebastiani Barbera, Sonoma Valley
Our 2017 Barbera is a deep purple color in the glass and exudes aromas of fresh cranberry, red plum, anise, and allspice. On the palate, mouthwatering flavors of cherry and wild raspberry are complemented by notes of cedar, licorice and baking spices. Typical of this Northern Italy varietal, this wine is light-bodied with soft tannins and bright juicy acidity.
Food Pairing Notes
Enjoy with classic Italian dishes such as marinara pasta or wood-fired pizza.
91% Barbera, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon
12 months in Hungarian and American Oak
The fruit was crushed and then destemmed into a tank for a four day cold soak. The grapes were pressed slightly sweet with only a light press fraction added back. It went into 65% Hungarian and 35% American oak. The wine was aged for 12 months, and then blended with 9% Cabernet Sauvignon for enhanced texture.
Barbera is arguably the most successful Italian varietal grown in California. The late August Sebastiani pioneered this varietal in the early 1960s and has been famous for it ever since. The core of our 2017 Barbera comes from the Morning Sun Vineyard located in the Sonoma Valley on Sonoma Mountain. The 2017 growing season started out with record setting rainfalls, delaying bud break from years past. Spring and summer experienced a mixture of foggy, warm and windy conditions. The summer months were moderately warm, allowing the grapes to mature at an ideal pace. Extreme head spikes at the end of August to early September pushed harvest ahead of schedule.
