2017 Foley Johnson Handmade Zinfandel, Napa Valley
Our 2017 Handmade Zinfandel opens with bold aromas of clove and hints of cumin. As it opens up, dark plum and currant aromas emerge. On the palate, juicy flavors of black cherry and raspberry are complemented by hints of dried herbs and spice. This medium-bodied wine offers bright acidity and soft tannins that lead to a long, smooth finish.
75% Zinfandel, 12% Petite Sirah, 6% Alicante Bouschet, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot
15 months in Hungarian oak barrels (20% new)
Located in the volcanic mountains of eastern Napa, the Sage Canyon Vineyard is among hundreds of acres of vines perched along ridges and clinging to steep hillsides. The soils, exposures, elevation changes and sub-climates are so complex that the property is delineated into more than 100 micro-blocks. Each of these tiny plots is treated as an individual vineyard with varieties, clones, rootstocks, density, trellising and farming methods tailored specifically to the site. At Foley Johnson, we take non-traditional approach to Zinfandel winemaking. Rather than running fermentation temperatures up to 90+ degrees, which would extract the harsh seed tannins of Zinfandel along with the raisin or prune flavors of the ever-present raisins trapped inside of the clusters, a long, cool fermentation is used to extract only from the freshest of berries. Press wine is rarely included – again to avoid picking up anything other than pure, ripe fruit flavors. Once the wine was drained from tank, it was aged for 15 months in 20% new Hungarian oak barrels.
The 2017 growing season was fantastic. The hot summer months pushed the fruit to maturity quicker than in previous seasons, but a few weeks of cold weather stalled ripening. We picked the fruit sooner than the rest of the valley generally speaking, and before the October wine country fires hit. The fruit entered the winery high in quality and with exceptional profiles.
