2017 Foley Johnson Handmade Peral Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford
91 Points - Wine Spectator
Our 2017 Peral Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of black currant, anise and toasted oak. On the palate, bold tannins are balanced with flavors of blackberry and dark cherry with savory notes of tobacco and graphite.
The 2017 vintage started out with a wet spring that extended flowering and stimulated vigorous vines. We had a mild summer with the promise of a beautiful harvest. Then in early fall the first heat wave kicked harvest into full gear, ripening everything almost at once. This allowed the fruit to develop deeper, more concentrated flavors along with low yields. Right behind this heat wave came the wild fires; luckily, we had already brought in 99% of our fruit crop.

The Foley Johnson 2017 Peral Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from our Peral Vineyard, a 10 acre parcel adjacent to our main Rutherford Estate. The name Peral pays homage to the sites history as a pear orchard. Today a single 100 year old pear tree remains in the vineyard. It is comprised of thicker and heavier adobe soils with small amounts of gravel which are perfect for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. The ideal growing conditions in the vineyard allow our Bordeaux varietals to reach full maturity on the vine without taking on the green, leafy taste of under-ripe fruit.
