Intense aromas of baked apples, toasted brioche, and lemon curd. It is a big, bold Chardonnay with good weight and balanced acidity. A long, pleasant finish and complement the fruit and mineral backbone present in this rich, luscious wine.

Winemaker Notes

Our 2017 Barrel Select Chardonnay is made from only the best hand selected fruit harvested from our Rancho Santa Rosa Vineyard. This straw colored wine has intense aromas of baked apples, toasted brioche, and lemon curd. It is a big, bold Chardonnay with good weight and balanced acidity. The palate reveals flavors of Golden Delicious apples, ripe white nectarines, and Key lime pie with graham crust. Caramel-like barrel spices contribute to a long, pleasant finish and complement the fruit and mineral backbone present in this rich, luscious wine.

Production Notes

Barrel Select is the ultimate expression of cool-climate Chardonnay from our Rancho Santa Rosa Vineyard. Like a vinous jigsaw puzzle, it is an intricate assemblage of the most complex and concentrated fruit from the vintage. Following harvest, the grapes were gently whole-cluster pressed and transferred to tank. The fruit was racked into 100% new French oak barrels where it underwent weekly stirring of the lees to add texture and complexity. After 18 months of aging, the wine was bottled.

Vineyard Notes

The 2017 vintage started off with an extended cool growing season staging us for a later than normal start date to harvest. We had some concerns, but just like clockwork, we got some intense Labor Day heat which pushed the vines to maturation. The disease pressure was low and quality was good so having a little patience was a good virtue to possess. We also had the anomaly of a hard frost the first week of October with temperatures dipping down to 29° in some of the lower elevation blocks pushing us to pull in the last bit of fruit quickly. Harvest wrapped up on October 23 with mother nature delivering us a roller coaster of weather but with it a nuance and diversity of fruit expression.
