2017 Chateau St. Jean Reserve Malbec, Sonoma County
This Reserve Malbec leaps from the glass with a deep, rich perfume and sweet notes of boysenberry confiture, dark plum jam, cassis and vanilla. On the palate, it is full-bodied and bold, concentrated blackberries, black currant and kirsch, layered subtly within the wine.
Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren has championed Malbec and believes the variety flourishes at selected Sonoma sites. It has become one of her favorite varietals to bottle. The Reserve Malbec shows diversity of Sonoma terroirs.
Overall, 2017 proved to be slightly smaller yielding vintage but of exceptional quality. Warm late summer temperatures led to a quick and intense harvest. Fruit was allowed to mature and ripen perfectly on the vines before harvest officially began.
Chateau St. Jean’s Reserve wines are crafted by selecting vineyard lots from throughout Sonoma County that offer the most generous fruit expression and the ability to age.
