Great complexity and finesse. Aromas of currant, spice and expresso oak. On the palate, deep fruit expressions of juicy raspberry interlace with hints with earthy forest floor.

Winemaker Notes
The 2016 Alexander Valley Malbec delivers great complexity and finesse. Dark purple colors fill the glass, followed by aromas of currant, spice and expresso oak. On the palate, deep fruit expressions of juicy raspberry interlace with hints with earthy forest floor. The small size yield of the vintage makes for a more intense and concentrated wine. Lingering notes of dried leaves persist on the finish with a nice acidity, making it an ideal pairing for pizza or tomato based sauces. This wine will improve with decanting, and will only gain in complexity with a few more years in the bottle. - David Nakaji, Winemaker

Production Notes
After harvest, we cold soaked the fruit prior to fermentation. Once complete, the wine was racked off the lees and put into Hungarian oak barrels for 14 months of aging. A careful assemblage was carried out to seamlessly marry the lots. The ratio of new and used oak treatment was intended to showcase the exceptional fruit quality from 2016.
Vineyard Notes
The Alexander Valley is located north of the town of Healdsburg in Sonoma County. It is one of the warmer AVAs in the region making it the perfect spot for red Bordeaux grapes. The majority of the fruit in this 2016 Malbec came from Lyon Vineyards in Cloverdale. These blocks are gravelly, well-drained sites located nearby the Russian River. A small percentage of Merlot from Firestone Vineyard was added to the final blend. 2016 produced exceptional quality fruit in Alexander Valley. Warm temperatures in late winter and early spring pushed bud break ahead of schedule. A little unsettled weather during berry set led to some reduced yields, but overall we came in at the low end of average. The summer months were moderately warm with few heat spikes. Overall, the mild season gave us wines of ample ripeness and great complexity.
