2016 Foley Sonoma Oz Zinfandel, Alexander Valley
Originally planted in 1896, the Oz Vineyard is one of the oldest vineyards in Alexander Valley and we are pleased to be able to craft such a stunning wine from our friendly neighbors! The 2016 OZ Zinfandel has a distinct cherry pie aromatic profile, which follows onto the palate. Although opulent with dark, ripe fruit spilling into every edge of it, tart cherry notes help to keep the wine from taking itself too seriously, and provides for a wine that should age well for the next seven years.
99% Zinfandel, 1 % Pinot Noir
23 months in French oak, 35% new
The Osborn Vineyard, or “Oz” for short, is our northwest neighbor. While very similar to the soil of our Estate Old Vine block, Oz differs in that it produces fruit that creates a more earthy profile and boldness on the palate. After harvest, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks and then racked to French oak barrels. After aging for 23 months in barrel (35% new) with regular lees stirring, the wine was bottled.
2016 was a superb vintage in Alexander Valley. Although yields were slightly lower than in 2015, fruit quality was high across all varietals. Veraison set in early and completed by the end of July - beginning of August, and a week of warm temperatures pushed harvest up ahead of schedule. The fruit for this 2016 Zinfandel entered the crush pad in optimal condition.
