2016 Foley Sonoma Estate Old Vine Zinfandel, Alexander Valley
Rich and opulent, our 2016 Estate Old Vine Zinfandel showcases the unique fruit from vines planted over 100 years ago. This is a wine that starts with a full nose showing black cherry, ripe blackberry and black pepper. The mouth has medium round tannins that highlight the black fruit, truffle, and finish of toffee and dark chocolate.
100% Old Vine Zinfandel
October 5 – 7, 2016
17 months in French oak, 40% new
Our three estate Zinfandel vineyards were planted at different times; one lot was planted over 100 years ago and acted as the framework around which the winery was built, the other two lots were planted around 2000. The fruit for this wine is entirely from our Old Vine Vineyard. Following harvest, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks and then racked to French oak barrels. After aging for 17 months in French oak (40% new) with regular lees stirring, the wine was bottled.
2016 was a superb vintage in Alexander Valley. Although yields were slightly lower than in 2015, fruit quality was high across all varietals. Veraison set in early and completed by the end of July - beginning of August, and a week of warm temperatures pushed harvest up ahead of schedule. The fruit was harvested October 5 – 7, 2016 and entered the crush pad in optimal condition.
