100% Chenin Blanc
September 3, 2016.
3 year old neutral barrels
After several years of drought, the 2016 vintage started out with an average amount of rainfall (about 13 inches) in winter. Weather remained cooperative throughout budbreak and bloom resulting in a good set and even ripening. Ample sunshine during the summer months delivered ideal grapes full of flavor. We harvested the fruit for this wine on September 3, 2016. This limited production bottling of Chalone 2016 Estate Chenin Blanc was sourced from a vineyard planted in 1919. Vines this old produce miniscule yields but extraordinary fruit resulting in a rare opportunity to try what we consider liquid gold.
This wine captures both the terroir and the long history of Chalone Vineyard. The 3.79-acre Chenin Blanc vineyard was hand planted by Lucien Charles Tamm, who recognized this remote, mountainous site as having similar limestone soils to those in his native France.
