2015 Kuleto Sangiovese, Napa Valley
Our 2015 Sangiovese conjures up the warmest days up here on the mountain. Sweet black licorice, warm red apple skins, and melted caramel notes that are reminiscent of a candy apple dominate the nose and mouth. Some vintages of this Sangiovese lean more toward the fresh red fruits of a Rosso di Montalcino or a high-end Chianti, and other vintages resemble the riper, more powerful and age-worthy wines of Brunello. This year, it’s definitely the latter.
97% Sangiovese, 3% Zinfandel
18 months in 33% new Hungarian oak puncheons
The 2015 vintage was lighter than in the previous three vintages, but produced wines of great intensity and concentration. At critical periods, the weather remained cool enough to extend harvest for over two weeks, allowing for good flavor development without dehydration of the fruit. At Kuleto Estate, three clones of Sangiovese are planted in three separate blocks and each bring a unique character to the blend. The Deloreto selection is perhaps the most unusual with its saturated bright red color, floral notes, and tremendous acidity. The Trentadue and Shafer selections contribute mouth-filling tannin and deeper, darker aromas and flavors. In 2015, we co-fermented a portion of the Sangiovese with some Zinfandel to flesh out the mid-palate and provide some even darker aromatic highlights.
