2014 Gavilan Chalone Estate Pinot Noir, Chalone AVA
This 2014 Gavilan Pinot Noir fills the glass with a vibrant ruby color. Aromas of juicy fruit, rose petal and dried herbs emerge with each swirl. The palate is fresh and approachable with flavors of raspberry, sage and sweet spice on the finish. While this wine is more fruit-driven than our terroir-focused Chalone Estate wines, it shows the intriguing minerality that is the signature of the mountaintop Chalone appellation.

A very low-rainfall winter was followed by a dry, warm spring and nearly ideal summer in 2014 following the drought patterns of prior years. These factors resulted in balanced vine canopies, excellent fruit set and small, concentrated grapes. Due to the warm weather it was a very condensed harvest, grapes came into the winery a couple weeks early. The Pinot Noir vines ripened their clusters slowly and evenly through the sunny days and brilliantly clear, cool nights. The grapes were harvested from August 19 to September 6, 2014.
Gavilan wines are created primarily from young vines grafted to specific Pinot Noir Dijon clones that produce bright, supple fruit character. Our Pinot Noir vines are planted on a plateau at 1,650 to 1,800 feet of elevation, with nutrient-poor limestone soils similar to those found in Burgundy.
