2014 Chalone Vineyard Estate Syrah, Chalone AVA
Our 2014 Estate Syrah is rich and robust. Dark inky and purple hues fill the glass while aromas of anise, raspberry pie and pomegranate emerge. The palate is full bodied and packed with dark fruit, spice and a hint of tobacco. Notes of clove and peppery spice intermingle seamlessly with supple tannins on the lingering finish.
Food Pairing Notes
Pair with a pomegranate and fennel glazed rack of lamb.
24 months of barrel aging, 25% new French oak barrels
A very low-rainfall winter was followed by a dry, warm spring and nearly ideal summer in 2014 following the drought patterns of prior years. These factors resulted in balanced vine canopies, excellent fruit set and small, concentrated grapes. Due to the warm weather it was a very condensed harvest, grapes came into the winery a couple weeks early. The Syrah vines ripened their clusters slowly and evenly through the sunny days and brilliantly clear, cool nights.
Our Syrah vineyards make up 18 acres on the Chalone estate. These acres are divided into three sections: Tower, Strip and Macwood Vineyard, and the vines are grafted to three different Syrah clones for flavor complexity. The Australian Shiraz clone brings the Old World character: earthy spice, black tar, white pepper and deep fruit. The northern Rhône Syrah clone is bright and fruit-driven. The third clone’s character is between the Rhône and Shiraz clones, making the blend reminiscent of both wine regions, yet shaped by the terroir of Chalone.
