2014 Chalone Vineyard Estate Pinot Noir, Chalone AVA
Our 2014 Estate Pinot Noir is composed of 100% estate vineyard fruit. An intriguing bouquet of black cherry, blueberry and spice draws you in. The silky palate has focused notes of black licorice, root beer and a hint of nutmeg. A wet stone minerality neatly ties up all these elements on the lingering finish.
Food Pairing Notes
Pair with mushroom and Burrata bruschetta or herb crusted salmon.
100% Pinot Noir
10 months of barrel aging, 40% new French oak barrels.
A very low-rainfall winter was followed by a dry, warm spring and nearly ideal summer in 2014 following the drought patterns of prior years. These factors resulted in balanced vine canopies, excellent fruit set and small, concentrated grapes. Due to the warm weather it was a very condensed harvest, grapes came into the winery a couple weeks early. The Pinot Noir vines ripened their clusters slowly and evenly through the sunny days and brilliantly clear, cool nights.
The thin, limestone-rich soils of Chalone Vineyard produce low yields of grapes bursting with rich, intense flavors and impeccable balance. Year after year, our Estate Pinot Noir exemplifies the impeccable structure and flavor complexity imparted by old vines budded to heritage clones; and, the 2014 vintage is no different. This Pinot Noir hails from the Vista and Reservoir blocks of our estate vineyards. The name of the Chalone American Viticultural Area (AVA), like that of the winery, comes from the name of a tribe of Native Americans who once inhabited this isolated area.
