2013 Kuleto Estate The Point Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
Everything about the 2013 ‘The Point’ cabernet evokes the shimmering hot summer days up here on the mountain. There is something ‘melted’ about this wine. The color is like reddish black tar. The leading aroma is dominated by melted black and red licorice candy smells followed up by super-ripe or sun-baked blackberries. The oak contributes a vanilla extract headiness to the fruit and spice. This wines is the perfect cold weather sipping wine!
92% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Syrah, 2% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Malbec from a co-fermented lot
29 months in 33% new oak, 75% French, 25% American
Wine lots and barrels selected for ‘The Point” Cabernet Sauvignon don’t necessarily come from a particular spot on the estate (à la Vineyard Designate), but rather share common flavor and structural attributes that highlight explosive fruit, spicy wood, mouth-filling tannins, and alcoholic warmth. Most of you have visited the winery and taken the walk out to look over the Napa Valley from our promontory. The heady aromatics and sun-drenched fruit flavors of “The Point” are inspired by this lofty view.
Like vintage 2012, vintage 2013 it was ‘perfect’ by nearly all grape-growing standards in that yields were slightly above average, the weather was evenly warm, and fruit moved toward ideal ripeness without the fits and starts of the preceding two vintages. This produced wines with tremendous fruit flavors and textural depth. If you’re wondering if we in the Napa Valley ever tire of ‘perfect’ vintages, the answer is “not at all”.
