2013 Kuleto Estate Syrah, Napa Valley
The Syrah up at Kuleto Estate always produces one of the most compelling wines of the vintage, and vintage 2013 was no exception. The thin-soiled and windy areas where our Syrah grows produce wines of great personality and stature. Syrah is inherently ‘masculine’ in its flavor profile (i.e. smoky, meaty, and oily), and we therefore always include a bit of whole cluster Muscat to one of the fermenters to add a touch of ‘feminine’ or floral notes. That said, the Muscat did little to tame the beast that is the 2013 Syrah! Heady aromas of blueberry syrup, black plums, and toasted walnuts claw their way out of the glass. It’s alcoholic for sure, but it remains in balance due to huge tannins and decent acidity. It’s a wine that makes me glad I’m not a Vegan. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that).
99% Syrah, 1% Muscat Blanc

Like vintage 2012, vintage 2013 it was ÔperfectÕ by nearly all grape-growing standards in that yields were slightly above average, the weather was evenly warm, and fruit moved toward ideal ripeness without the fits and starts of the preceding two vintages. This produced wines with tremendous fruit flavors and textural depth. If you’re wondering if we in the Napa Valley ever tire of ‘perfect’ vintages, the answer is “not at all”.
