2013 Foley Johnson Handmade Rancho Santa Rosa Chardonnay, Sta. Rita Hills
Sta. Rita Hills is one of the premier AVAs for Chardonnay in California. This 2013 is an elegant Chardonnay with beautiful notes of vanilla bean, crème brulee, toasted graham, and faint hints of gardenia flower. A distinctive expression of varietal character, the palate is filled with fresh pineapple and a decadent mouth feel of creamy vanilla custard and toasted coconut. The barrel fermentation gives this wine its hint of mid-palate sweetness and long structured finish that complement the refined minerality of the fruit/vineyard block.
Sta. Rita Hills
15 months in French oak barrels (100% new)
March 31, 2015
The 2013 vintage was quite abundant due to the great weather, with mild rain during the first part of spring and only a few incidents of frost before bud break. Conditions remained ideal from bloom to set only minimally burdened by the typical afternoon winds that sweep through Sta. Rita Hills. The yields were high in quality and quantity, emulating the 2012 vintage. Produced by guest winemaker Lorna Kreutz, this wine shows the clarity and structure typical of its cool climate origins. After harvest, the grapes were whole-cluster pressed and transferred to tank where it was fermented with native yeast and then racked to new French oak barrels. After 15 months in wood (100% new) with regular lees stirring, the wine was bottled.
Rancho Sta. Rosa is located in the Sta. Rita Hills region of Santa Barbara County. Climbing from 500 to 1,000 feet above sea level, this hilly site is treated as a series of individual micro-vineyards delineated by soil, exposure, elevation, grade, rootstock and clones. The well-draining soils and cool maritime climate make this a perfect spot for Chardonnay.
