2013 Foley Johnson Estate Meritage, Rutherford
The 2013 Estate Meritage Red is a blend predominantly consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (28%) and small amounts of Petit Verdot and Malbec. Its deep, garnet-purple color is enticing and draws you in. Smoky aromas with blackberry and dark cassis lead on the nose. The palate delights the senses with flavors of violet, coffee, clove and vanilla bean. Its luxurious mouth-feel and soft, well-integrated tannins make this a perfect pairing with roasted leg of lamb, or filet mignon.

Vintage 2013 was exceptional to say the least! The warm, dry spring resulted in early bud break that happened to fall during the same week as last year’s vintage. Moderate temperatures throughout most of the growing season made for ideal conditions, healthy vines, and even ripening of the fruit. October was cool, but sunny, which allowed for extended hang times and complete ripening. The Foley Johnson Estate Meritage is grown on loamy soils of gravel, clay, and sand which helps provide ample drainage and lessen the vigor of foliage growth. These ideal growing conditions allow our Bordeaux varietals to reach full maturity on the vine without taking on the green leafy taste of under-ripened fruit. The grapes were harvested between September 9th and October 25th, 2013.
