2012 Foley Johnson Handmade Firestone Red, Santa Ynez Valley
The 2012 Handmade Firestone Red is rich and robust with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon making up the final blend. Dark fruit aromas dominate with background hints of cocoa and toasted oak. The palate reveals layer upon layer of blackberry, blueberry and plum with well integrated tannins providing structure and length. Lingering flavors of leather, forest floor and spice round out the finish.

This wine comes from Firestone’s Vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley. Our vineyards sit at 1,000 feet in elevation. While we have vines that date back to the original plantings from 40 years ago, recently we have begun a replanting of our estate vineyards. These plantings utilize the most recent advances in viticulture regarding clone selection, row orientation, and rootstocks. The winemaker selected individual barrels from special lots to create this unique blend. After assembling, the wine was aged in barrel before bottling, allowing the flavors to marry properly.
The 2012 vintage was quite an impeccable growing season! Summer in the Central Coast started off on the cool side again this year. Very little rain in the late spring made for perfect conditions from set through veraison. The sustained summer heat created wines that are concentrated and much more powerful and textural than the 2011’s. We were ecstatic to have extremely high quality grapes during our September-November harvest this year.
