Here at the Foley Food & Wine Society, we believe in three things: exceptional wine, delicious food and outstanding destinations. As much as we would like to drink wine and eat gourmet every night of the week, staying active is an important part of the wine country lifestyle. Luckily for us, we have no shortage of trails, open space and a seemingly endless supply of great wineries to keep us motivated so we can maintain our wine and cheese diet.
Meet our Team Captains for the Destination Races Napa to Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon
An Oregon native, Dave Lattin was exposed to wine at an early age. As the son of a professor, Dave and his family had the opportunity to live in Holland for a year on two separate occasions. While in Europe, Dave’s family made the most of their time abroad, traveling to Germany and France amongst other countries, visiting many of the wine regions along the way. During his travels, Dave was immersed in the diverse food culture of Europe which often involved wine at mealtimes.
Years later while completing his Microbiology degree at Oregon State University, Dave continued to explore the world of food and wine but never considered a career in winemaking. It wasn’t until Dave was working on his senior project with a student on exchange from Germany that he experienced what he refers to as the “light bulb” moment. His classmate suggested that he purse a degree in Enology, which is the study of winemaking. Dave knew immediately that he was going to become a winemaker and after completing his bachelors, Dave was accepted into the Enology master program at UC Davis and has been making wine ever since.
As the daughter of Proprietor Bill Foley, Courtney is no stranger to the wine country lifestyle—growing up, she spent a good portion of her childhood on vineyards and ranches, developing an interest in the environment at an early age. After college, Courtney worked in sales at Young’s Market, then moved over to FFW sales, and eventually decided to switch gears and pursue winemaking. From her early exposure, Courtney always liked the idea of working the land and being outside, so the decision to pursue winemaking was a natural one. As a geology minor, she had already built a foundation for winemaking and is furthering her education by taking enology courses. Last year, Courtney completed her first harvest at Foley Estates in Santa Barbara and has since moved north to Napa where she now works with the winemaking team at Foley Johnson.
Part I of our Lifestyle Series - Destination Races Training:
FFWS: What do you enjoy most about winemaking?
DL: I love working with wine because there is so much variety of work within the year and from year to year. I was excited about the prospect of being a winemaker because I knew I would be in a beautiful place—this year will be my 31st harvest to date and I can’t wait to get started.
CF: So far, I have really enjoyed how multifaceted it is. A lot of my interests come together on this side of the industry, and so it really hits all chords; the job includes social, artistic and sensory components, which appeals to me. I am also fascinated by the scientific side of it, and love interacting with my environment. Not to mention, it is challenging and fun to constantly be learning on the job, as each harvest is different. But, mostly, I love being part of a team where everyone works together to produce something so many people will enjoy.
FFWS: Why is exercise important to you?
DL: I'm the kind of person who needs a goal to motivate myself to stay active and in order to be serious, it’s nice to set a goal like this. In addition to all of the health benefits from exercise, one of my main reasons for working out is so I can eat anything I want. I’ve always loved to cook, especially with fresh ingredients, and I so enjoy relaxing at the end of the day with a nice bottle of wine to go with my meal.
CF: Ever since I was young, I’ve preferred to spend my time outdoors and I go hiking often. Running is a sport I’ve always appreciated and is important to me because it’s a great way to clear my head and relieve stress. I usually like to start or end my day with a run and have two energetic dogs who pull me along with them.
FFWS: Is this your first half Marathon?
DL: I have never run anything over a 10K so this will be my first half marathon. These days I primarily cycle to get my cardio in, but I’ve always enjoyed running, so I'm looking forward to the challenge.
CF: No, I’ve done two previous half marathons and a twelve-person, 199 mile relay race as well. This will be my first half marathon with Destination Races, so I'm really looking forward to it.
FFWS: How do you plan on training?
DL: I keep a regular base level of activity by walking a three mile loop with my dog several times a week. I plan to build upon that and start incorporating running three times a week while adding in some weight training as well.
CF: Since I hike pretty regularly, I plan to start integrating running into my weekly activity. From there, I am going to build up my endurance while increase my mileage during the months leading up to the race. I just recently moved to Napa and have found some great running trails, so I'm excited to start training.
