Winemaker Notes
The fruit for our Santa Margarita Zinfandel is sourced from a small vineyard just outside of the town of Santa Margarita near Paso Robles. Planted on gentle slopes, its sandy loam soils help to promote vines with reduced vigor. Production Notes
2016 produced average yields and high quality fruit. Few frost spells in winter and little to no rain led to an early bud break at the end of February. A very good fruit set in spring was followed by a warm summer that kept the vines roaring through veraison and maturation. Harvest occurred from August 23rd- October 8th 2016.
Vineyard Notes
For a region that has been growing grapes since 1797, Paso Robles has all of a sudden become one of the “hottest” AVAs in California. Located midway between Santa Barbara and Monterey, this rolling countryside is synonymous with big, rich, high-character wines. The west portion of Paso Robles enjoys a moderately cool climate thanks to the influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean. This is great ground for Chardonnay. The inland east side is warm and sunny and perfect for Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
